Not all campgrounds are closed in Lake Tahoe in the fall, and fortunately there are a number of options that will give you some colorful backdrops.
Luther Pass is the only free drive-to campground in the basin. There are fifteen sites with fire rings & toilets, all next to the Tahoe Rim Trail.
North Canyon Campground is a walk-in tent campground near Spooner Lake, Lake Tahoe State Park. Four first-come sites with a toilet and tables.
Hobart Campground is a developed tent campground in the Spooner Backountry, Lake Tahoe State Park. There are four hike-in, first-come sites just over 7 miles in.
Marlette Peak Campground offers four backcountry tent sites in the Spooner Backcountry with toilets, picnic tables, and food storage. Less than an 8-mile hike.
Lake Forest Campground is a small campground on Lake Tahoe near Tahoe City. They have 20 walk-up only tent sites, pump water, and vault toilets.
Tahoe Valley Campground is a large 439-site campground in South Lake Tahoe. They accommodate tents and have an RV park with hookups. Pool, store, and WiFi available.
Chris Haven is an RV park in South Lake Tahoe with 96 sites and full hookups. Located along Highway 50 and near many shops and restaurants.
Bayview Campground is another one of Lake Tahoe’s few tent-only campgrounds. This campground has 12 walk-up only sites across from Emerald Bay’s Inspiration Point.
The Lake Tahoe KOA is 5 minutes from South Lake Tahoe. This campground has 52 tent & RV sites, open during summer. The RV park has hookups. This KOA also has a pool.
Campground By The Lake is a 178-site RV & tent campground right in the middle of South Lake Tahoe. Close to restaurants, entertainment, and a beach.
Camp Shelly is a campground near South Lake Tahoe with 25 tent & RV sites, showers, and flush toilets. Operated by the Livermore Area Parks & Rec District.
Desolation Wilderness offers fantastic dispersed backcountry tent camping near South Lake Tahoe. Permits are required year-round with quotas in effect during summer.
Granite Chief Wilderness is over 26,000 acres of beautiful wilderness area near Tahoe City. Dispersed backcountry tent camping is available. Permits not required.
North Tahoe high-altitude wilderness area with plenty of dispersed backcountry tent camping. Over 31,000 acres. No permits required.
Meeks Bay Resort is a small campground near Lake Tahoe with 37 tent and RV sites. Flush toilets, showers, a store, and marina on-site. No pets.
Meeks Bay Campground has 36 campsites near Lake Tahoe with flush toilets, water, and a great beach. Tent and RV sites available, no dogs on the beach.
William Kent Campground offers great camping near Lake Tahoe. A total of 76 RV and tent sites, some set aside for walk-ups. Fishing and boating nearby.
